La nuit est belle! is back again on the weekend of 09 to 11 October for a 6ᵉ edition dedicated to the culture of the night.
The gamble has paid off: habits are evolving and switching off public lighting in the dead of night has become largely entrenched in practice. Today, thanks to advances in lighting technology, the challenge is no longer simply to switch off, but to provide intelligent lighting that guarantees safety and efficiency. That’s what public lighting is all about.
In Greater Geneva, more than two-thirds of local authorities have adopted daily night-time switch-off. On the French Genevan side, more than 90% of communes and their residents have opted for partial or total night-time switch-off.
For this 5ᵉ edition, La nuit est belle! will honour these local authorities committed to an approach that respects the environment and nocturnal heritage. The 2025 event will also reinforce its call for the reduction of excessive artificial lighting, by encouraging shopkeepers, residents and businesses to get involved in this transition.
Convinced that culture is a powerful lever for raising awareness and bringing about change, the founding and organising partners – Greater Geneva, the Natural History Museum, the Geneva Astronomical Society and the Maison du Salève – are putting this year’s event under the banner of “Culture… at night”.
