Description
Les Enfants du Levant, the little-known but true story of a children's penal colony on the most beautiful of the golden islands.
An opera for the whole family!
Opera by Isabelle Aboulker, written for children's choir & two adult soloists.
The staging was devised and built by the students, under the guidance of their teacher.
HISTORY: The story tells how abandoned children, orphans and petty criminals were sent to penal farms between 1850 and 1880. In these colonies, children are malnourished and exploited. The story traces their lives from their arrival on L'ile du Levant to its closure in 1880.
(True story told in the book "Les Enfants de L'ile du Levant" by Claude Gritti).
It was from this book that Isabelle Aboulker imagined her opera, to make their voices heard through music. The composer makes children's emotions sing: fear, anger, sadness, but also hope and solidarity.
Her music is rich and lively, blending strong, intense moments.
