Connected walk: The battle of Thairy

  • Treasure hunt
Parking du cimetière de Thairy, Chemin du 2 Mars 1814, 74160 Saint-Julien-en-Genevois
A family outing to discover the hamlets of Thairy and Crache (St-Julien en Genevois). This walk follows in the footsteps of Napoleon's soldiers, who set out in early 1814 to liberate the Savoy region.
The latter were partially occupied by an Austrian army that had become hostile to the Emperor, after having been his ally for a time. After the liberation of Chambéry, Annecy and other major Savoyard towns, the battle is now raging all around Saint Julien, particularly in the small hamlet of Thairy. It's March 1, 1814. It's cold, it's snowing, and this last battle is recounted on the very spot where, meter by meter, the men of generals Dessaix and Marchand regained control of the hamlet (and of Saint Julien) from the Austrians that day.
