The Voirons

A massif with preserved flora and fauna

With over 950 hectares classified as Natura 2000, the Voirons mountain range has a very high heritage value. The massif is also considered a major habitat for lynxes.

In addition to the lynx, a host of other animals find refuge in the Voirons, including the cane toad and the chamois.

The Voirons mountains are also home to a wealth of flora that is a botanist’s delight. Some very rare specimens can be found here, such as the Sabot de Vénus and the superb carnation.

Although they are much better known for their forests than for hiking, the Voirons are nonetheless an ideal place to go for a walk.

Rivaling the Salève, the Voirons massif towers above it with its peak reaching 1,480 metres. Like the Salève, it offers numerous marked hiking trails, including the recent Pralère and Signal des Voirons routes.

The Voirons massif is also crossed by the Balcon du Léman Grande Randonnée (GR) route, which is reserved for experienced hikers.

Finally, for the more athletic, it is possible to cycle the Tour des Voirons. However, as it is classified as a red level circuit, it is not recommended for children or those who are unprepared. Nevertheless, the circuit offers magnificent views, especially around the Col de Saxel.

TO SEE ROUND

Folklore has it that this massif takes its name from the fact that it offers a breathtaking 360° view of its surroundings. It is possible to contemplate the beauty of the Alpine landscape from this pre-alpine massif.

In fact, it’s fair to say that only the Voirons can boast such a panoramic view of the whole of the Lake Geneva basin, the Jura chain, the Mont Blanc massif, the Vallée Verte and also the Giffre and Aravis mountains.
