Street art in Saint-Julien-en-Genevois

Art in the city
From concrete to emotion: an artistic journey through the city centre

Saint-Julien-en-Genevois is being transformed into a veritable open-air gallery, where street art invites itself into the heart of the town to tell stories, embellish the public space and refl ect the local identity. For several years now, talented artists, in collaboration with committed associations such as the AssoGlitch, have been taking over the town’s walls to create monumental frescoes that are accessible to all.

These works, which can be seen in the town centre, offer an artistic experience under the open sky, free of charge and open to everyone, all year round. They demonstrate the local authority’s commitment to culture and the enhancement of urban space.

FRESQUES DU GYMNASE DU LÉMAN

By Wozdat | 2016 À Saint-Julien-en-Genevois, it’s near the Gymnase du Léman that the route démarre. It was here that Saint-Julien’s first monumental fresco was created. The artist Wozdat dedicated the wall to basketball and Michael Jordan. This creation was accompanied by the MurExpress project. The Léman gymnasium was completely covered by a dozen local artists.

FRESQUE DE LA GRANDE RUE

By Cité Création | 2012 7 minutes, that’s how long you’ll have to wait for the rest of the route. Head for the Post Office. In the very heart of the town, walk past the Town Hall to reach the Grande Rue, where you will see two trompe-lœil. On one of the two walls, you can see a scene full of life: a local woman opens her false shutters to reveal a group of musicians playing in front of a Genevan landscape. Festive, isn’t it?

FRESQUE DE LA GRANDE RUE

By Cité Création | 2012 &Previously, take the few steps away from the second trompe-l’œil. Here, a landscape familiar to the inhabitants of Saint-Julien is depicted: a fake Salève, painted to imitate the real thing. It adorns this wall to bring nature and the mountains into the heart of the town.

Vivre ensemble

By Keim | 2018 It’s time to head to the avenue de Ternier to admire the next work on the route. It was commissioned by the social housing company Erilia and the town of Saint-Julien-en-Genevois. Realised by the Glitch association and the artist Keim, it is a large-scale work of art that has been painted here: the Vivre ensemble fresco.

LE FILS DE L’HOMME

Par Wozdat | 2017 C’est parti pour la cinquième et avantière étape de notre parcours. Here, the artist-engraver Wozdat has been working with secondary school pupils at the Collège de la Présentation de Marie, in the plastic arts option. The aim was to explore the creative process, from the design to the production of a collaborative mural, through visits and creative workshops. A real treat, don’t you think!

A boat, a life

By Wozdat | 2019 Finally, let your steps guide you to the last stop on the route: the Saint-Julien-en-Genevois hospital. This fresco depicts the journey of a lifetime. The boat symbolises displacement and the positive drive to move forward. The sail is represented by a heart, the emblem of the human being in this composition. The heart is fed by moving particles from the sun and water. These give rise to the flowers. A retranscription of the text l’Invitation au Voyage by Charles Baudelaire can be seen all over the sail.
