Day 1 (Sunday): Arrival in Geneva
The first day of the trip is the easiest of all: all you have to do is arrive in Geneva! Settle into your hotel in the heart of the city, then enjoy some free time for sightseeing. Whether you want to stroll through beautiful botanical gardens, shop for world-famous watches, chocolates, Swiss knives or set sail on Lake Geneva, it's up to you!
Day 2 (Monday): Geneva to Seyssel - 63km and 710 m ascent
After breakfast, you'll meet our local representative at your hotel, who will explain the itinerary and give you all the equipment you need for your trip. This is where your adventure really begins. This is the most "arduous" day's cycling of the trip, with hills and the highest ascent - but the good news is you'll get to enjoy plenty of downhill, 910 meters in total! The route winds south-west, across the Swiss border into the vineyards and then into the Rhône-Alpes region of France, where you'll spend the rest of your trip. There are plenty of good reasons to stop along the way: remarkable panoramas and historic buildings. You'll end the day in Seyssel, a surprisingly small village. Your hotel, on the right bank of the Rhône, is the perfect place to rest your legs.
Day 3 (Tuesday): Seyssel to Champagneux - short option 54km and 430 m ascent or long option (via Bugey) 77km and 680 m ascent.
Covering a shorter distance, in an almost straight line, with a positive ascent of just 325 meters, this will feel like a short ride compared to the previous day. Take time to explore Chanaz, a Little Venice, and stop off in the Roman town of Belley to sample the local cheeses. If you want to add a few kilometers to the day's itinerary, you can also have lunch in one of the wine cellars on the shores of Lac du Bourget just off the road. The advantage of a self-guided tour is that it's up to you. Finish off with a meal, a swim and a good night's sleep in Champagneux.
Day 4 (Wednesday): Champagneux to Pérouges - short option 66km and 330m ascent or long option 88km and 380m ascent.
Get ready for an "off-ViaRhôna adventure" on this day, which also happens to be the longest stage of the trip (68 km). As the ViaRhôna is still under construction, you'll have the opportunity to familiarize yourself with another river: the Isère, while strolling along quiet country roads. You'll pass through Briord, a small town with a Roman aqueduct, and typical villages such as Sault-Brénaz, Hières-sur-Amby, Vernas and Chânes.
We've saved the best for last: your medieval destination, the fortified town of Pérouges.
Day 5 (Thursday): Pérouges to Lyon - short option 43km and 170 m ascent or long option 60 km and 320 m ascent
As Lyon has enough attractions to keep you busy for days or even weeks, you can cycle straight to the city. If you want to take your time, you can picnic in the Parc de Miribel Jonage (one of Europe's largest urban parks) and enjoy a swim in the Lac des Eaux Bleues. On arrival in Lyon, your options for the rest of the day are endless: from a stroll to the Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière for the best panoramic view of the city, to a visit to a museum... You can also reward your cycling soul with a delicious meal in one of the city's typical bouchon restaurants!
