Founded in 1974 as a Kunsthalle, the Centre d'Art Contemporain Genève is the leading contemporary art institution in French-speaking Switzerland. A Kunsthalle is a space for production, research and experimentation.
Its role is to design exhibitions, to actively connect the public with these exhibitions in order to open up a space for dialogue around contemporary culture, and to publish catalogs and art books. Unlike a museum, a Kunsthalle has no collection. Looking to the future, it presents artists from the emerging local and international scene. In this way, over the past forty years, the Centre has anticipated trends, discovered talents and presented Swiss and international artists at the start of their careers. The programming engages all fields of contemporary practice and over 300 pioneering exhibitions have been presented at the Centre d'Art Contemporain Genève, with artists such as Joseph Beuys, Martin Boyce, Olaf Breuning, Pablo Bronstein, Maurizio Cattelan, Philippe Decrauzat, Gilbert & George, Nan Goldin, Dan Graham, Joan Jonas, On Kawara, William Kentridge, Joachim Koester, Robert Overby, Pipilotti Rist, Ugo Rondinone, Fernando Sanchez-Castillo, Thomas Scheibitz, Shirana Shahbazi, Cindy Sherman, Josh Smith, Andy Warhol, Lawrence Weiner, Christopher Wool and many others.
The Centre boasts 1300m2 of exhibition space on three levels. Two entire floors are devoted to large-scale exhibitions, while the top floor houses a cinema (Cinema Dynamo), a bookshop, a Project Space and an artists' residence.
